What each type of kit does, who is qualified to install it, how the installation works, the practical points worth knowing, and what it connects to. Plain information for homeowners.
Before you start: fitting a bulb or a leak sensor is fine for anyone. Altering fixed wiring is notifiable electrical work, anything on the gas side is Gas Safe work, and EV or solar installs need a registered electrician. If in doubt, get a qualified professional — and always isolate and prove dead before opening anything up.
Typical kit
Who installs it: Heating engineer or electrician. Anything touching the boiler or gas side is Gas Safe work.
How it goes in
- 1Identify the existing setup — combi, system boiler with cylinder, or heat pump. Photograph the old wiring centre before touching anything.
- 2Isolate the power at the boiler switch or consumer unit and prove dead.
- 3Note the existing terminals (L, N, call for heat, hot water) and label every wire before removal.
- 4Fit the receiver/backplate near the boiler or wiring centre, terminate to the manufacturer wiring diagram.
- 5Mount the wall thermostat around 1.4-1.5m high, away from radiators, direct sun, draughts and the front door.
- 6Power up, pair the thermostat to the receiver, then connect it to the home Wi-Fi and app.
- 7Run a full heat demand test on heating and hot water, and check the boiler responds within a minute.
Installer tips
- Weak signal is the most common problem — the receiver should be paired and tested in position before it is fixed down.
- Older systems often have no permanent live at the programmer, which can change what is needed.
- TRVs go on every radiator except the one on the bypass circuit.
- Know where the manual override is, and how the schedule and holiday mode work.

How integration actually works
The hub: most systems need one thing that talks to everything else — a hub, a bridge or the router itself. This is the brain, and it should stay powered and ideally wired to the router.
How devices talk: Wi-Fi is easy but crowded. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread create their own low-power mesh, which is more reliable across a whole house. Matter is the standard designed to let brands work together.
Automations: the value is not the app, it's the "if this, then that". Door unlocks so hallway lights come on. Leak sensor trips so the mains valve shuts. Nobody home so heating drops two degrees.
Voice: Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home sit on top. Name rooms and devices sensibly at setup and voice control just works.
The limits: no internet means most cloud features stop working. Some systems need a paid subscription. Battery devices need replacing every few years. Worth knowing before you buy.
Which trade does what
- • Electrician: EV charging, solar and battery storage, smart switches and dimmers, PoE camera cabling.
- • Heating engineer: smart thermostats, zoning and TRV upgrades — usually done alongside a boiler swap.
- • Plumber: leak detection and automatic mains shut-off valves.
- • Carpenter or builder: pre-wiring, cable routes and access panels while walls and ceilings are open.
- • Timing: cabling is far simpler and cheaper while a room is stripped back, before plastering.
